Ask Your Breeder These 3 Important Questions

Ask about your breeder’s philosophy of breeding.

Asking why your breeder began their practice in the first place will tell you a lot about their experience with the breed, as well as provide a window into their passion. It is important to be thorough when selecting a breeder. Find out what makes them tick, engage their personality, run from shadiness and misdirection.

Ask about genetics!

Learning about the genetics of your pup before making a commitment to adopt is of most importance. Inspect the recent genetic history of your pup’s bloodline. How old are the parents? What state of health are they in at that age? Has there ever been any sort of concerning medical emergency related to the pup’s parents? Are they MDR1 gene or any other harmful trait carriers? Is there recent history of hip dysplasia? Is this bloodline considered working or domestic? The more that you can find out about your pup’s bloodline, the higher ability you will have to make informed decisions about that pup’s future.

Develop trust with your breeder

Finally, we believe it is ultra important to develop a friendship and positive relationship with your breeder. As mentioned before, run from shadiness and dishonesty. Your breeder should always be kind, honest, and easy to work with throughout your reservation, pickup, and into the future. We love being a strong resource to our adopting families throughout our pup’s lifetimes. We are experts on our bloodlines and our sect of the Australian Shepherd breed.
