Frequently Asked Questions

What are your parents temperaments like?

We have given full temperament descriptions on this page! It is difficult to concisely put into words how our puppy-parents love us. They mold and teach us every day into better humans. Our puppy-parents encourage us in the way of relationship and fun.

What weight do you expect your average puppy to be?

Check our parents weight on this page to see a likely estimate of their weight. Our puppies will likely mimic their parents’ weight closely. In general, we expect our standard size Aussies to be roughly 45-70lbs. Males are typically larger than females.

What food will the puppies be on?

Occasionally, our favorite proteins and vegestables change, so check with us for a current selection. As a rule, we ALWAYS feed our parents and puppies the most top quality food that we can find. Each dog is different, and occasionally some stomachs are mores sensitive. Check out this video for advice on how to pick your own dog food!

How much do Aussies shed?

Our dogs shed moderately. One of the best ways we have found to control our long-haired, double-coated fur balls is to manually express their loose hair with an undercoat rake. Severe shedding can occur during the cold to warm transitional months. Regular brushing can help control when and where that hair comes out!

How much exercise will my Aussie need?

As young puppies, Australian Shepherds will be very cyclical in their play and sleep. For our dogs, we generally exercise them hard for around five to ten hours per week. This could mean anything from playing frisbee, chasing one another, playing in random sand pits, swimming in circles, or hiking. Aussies are generally ill-suited for highly sedentary lives.

How do your Aussies handle other pets and children(dogs, cats, children)?

Our puppies grow up in likely a similar environment to which they will spend the rest of their lives; a family home. In addition to our dogs, we also have a few cats, and plenty of young children in our immediate circle. Puppies learn from a young age that humans are nice, and cats are tolerable. Our dogs have truly never met a stranger!

Should I spay or neuter my puppy?

This is an important decision for you and your family to make! We encourage our families to consider spay or neutering their puppy for all reasons other than breeding(which must be disclosed to us). Various areas of your new journey may be easier with a spay or neutered puppy. Training, controllability, marking behaviors, libido, and energy levels, are all factors that will typically shift for the better. Check out our blog for more information.

Any advice on choosing a vet?

The biggest piece of advice we can give is to select a vet that you feel personally connected to, and stick with them. One of the most valuable assets that we have is our veterinarian’s personal cell phone. We know we can contact them at any point for any need we might have. Many vaccine and early puppy care plans exist and can be worth the monthly fee. Try visiting Banfield Pet Hospital!
